Adams Farm Merino Specialty Homespun Yarn

merino lamb and an adultAdams Farm specializes in smaller quantities of high quality wool from Delaine Merinos to maintain the traditional aspect of their product. The wool is processed by hand at the farm and by the Green Mountain Spinnery, which uses vintage machinery dating back to 1916. They process and spin the wool using the "greenspun technique," a certified organic process that involves vegetable based soaps and oils instead of petroleum and bleach based products commonly used by the textile industry. It's the world's softest wool, and we believe that once you use this specialty yarn, you'll never buy any from a store with "mart" or "picks" in its name.

We have both stranded yarn and plied yarns made for the fiber enthusiasts. A 4-stranded yarn is four unspun pencil-thin rovings twisted together in the same direction. Stranded yarn is often loftier, warmer, and has a softer hand, making it excellent for sweaters, scarves, and hats. A 3-ply yarn is made up of three singles spun in the same direction, then plied together in the opposite direction. Plied yarn is often stronger and offers less pilling, which makes it an excellent choice for socks, mittens, and frequently worn items.

A wonderful assortment of quality knitting needles, crochet hooks and helpful gadgets are available. We carry a great selection of interesting how-to and pattern books. Create the project of your dreams with Adams Farm's own exquisitely soft Merino yarns or spin your own yarns with fibers from our farm animals. An excellent selection of spinning wheels, handspindling kits and other nifty spinning accessories will round out our "Knitting Nook."

Weaving on a Tri-Loom or a Weavette

Beautiful shawls are woven on a hand-manipulated triangle frame loom in the Quilt and Fiber Loft. Discover the unique attributes of the tri-loom and how this loom differs from a treadle-operated floor loom. Some of our woven shawls feature handspun yarns from Adams Farm's own fiber producing animals. Others highlight our buttery soft 100% Merino wool yarns. All are stylish, very practical and of heirloom quality.

New in the summer of 2005 we started to carry the Buxton Brook Weavettes. These versitle modular looms have just been featured as a five page spread in Martha Stewart Living February 2006 issue. They work beautifully with our 3-ply yarns. They can be used to make clothing, coasters, ornaments, pillows, really anything! And they can be found here.
